My friend Linda Yakle is teaching an ambitious online humanities class complete with live streaming video, chat rooms, our photos, and ongoing conversations in Google +. Burgos is a perfect place to start our journey and her class because it has always been a cultural and commercial cross road—the Camino de Santiago runs east-west while the roads north to the coast travels through this town carrying products since the medieval period to ports along to coast. Burgos is one of our favorite towns—rich with Roman and medieval architecture, great food, and proud, generous people. The online teaching project, however, has not gone well.. We’ve both had problems connectivity, and Yakle has doubts about her hardware-a tablet, a go-pro video camera, a wifi-hotspot, and smartphone. She’s been working on problems since 2:30am. I’m up at dawn, it’s raining and cold. We’re not scheduled to start walking the Camino until tomorrow. Decadent after all the alburgues—still we are on the Camino: my knee and Yakle’s foot have been slowing us down the last two days. So we lay in our beds, drank cava, and ate chips and lomo.
